We spent the day with the Browns, waking up slowly to a cool breeze that came in through the patio, taking in a simple breakfast of cereal with strawberries (they're really cheap because there's an overabundance of them due to simultaneous growing seasons in Florida and California I believe), then we headed out to the Great Arizona Picnic in Scottsdale, AZ. Entry was $10 and the website advertised $1 tasting tickets, but we didn't find out until we got in that each food item was 3-6 tickets! We spent the first 10 minutes getting our 21+ wristbands and walking around to check out the different food booths. We decided to split for a bit and regroup in front of one of the bandstands. Danny ended up with some Fresh Mex, and I got some ribs (insert vendor later). We sat on the grassy hill overlooking one of the 3 (maybe just 2?) band stands and listened to a great Blues group. Little kids were dancing right next to the stage, and the twenty/thirty-somethings were dancing just as haphazardly at the perimeters of the grassy area, beers in hand. Later we moved on to the other stage and caught a group with a sort of Johnny Cash vibe. No kids running around in this area, but plenty of tank-top clad bicep-flexing boys (one that looked a lot like Ryan Seacrest) and blonde bombshells in cotton dresses and platform sandals. One was in stilleto heels. I don't know how she survived the rest of the day without sinking straight into the grass. In all a party atmosphere. And all this was set on City Hall and library property! It felt like a real community gathering, longtime friends greeting eachother and new relationships made over a cold beer (4 tickets)... or a sushi roll (2 tickets).
After the music, we decided that we wanted something substantial in our stomachs, that wasn't going to cost us a fortune in tickets. We went back to the Brown estate, relaxed for a bit, and then headed out to Macayo's for Mexican food and Margaritas! Tasty goodness. We had a view of the man-made pond and the temperature was perfect. We had fun conversations/debates about the utility of fiction vs non-fiction and black&white vs color photography in the digital age. Margaritas sure bring out the debater in me (and in cousin Steve). In the morning we leave for Albuquerque, and the Browns tell use we MUST stop in Sedona on the way, so we're adding just an hour or so to our trip to make this destination.
